In 1997, this extraordinary project was born – constructing a medieval castle using authentic 13th-century techniques. The goal? To test and better understand medieval building methods. Since then, stonemasons, carpenters, blacksmiths, and builders have been working together – live and in front of thousands of visitors.
Around forty skilled craftsmen have taken on the challenge of building a castle entirely with materials and techniques from the Middle Ages.
Season after season, new sections have been built – fortified walls, residential halls with wooden frameworks, and chambers – all constructed before the eyes of hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Nestled under oak trees in a wooden building with panoramic forest views, chef Reynald Petit-Simon serves a five-course “13th-century builders’ feast,” changing with the seasons.
